In this video I break down whether the Sony FX30 is still worth buying in 2025, and who I actually think it’s for. It’s an $1,800 crop-sensor cinema camera that I picked up last month, and after shooting with it over the holiday break I can confidently say it’s basically the perfect camera for a very specific type of creator. I’ve been using the Sony a7 IV as my main photo/video camera for the last three years and I’m not getting rid of it—so I’m not coming at this as an “FX30 replaces everything” kind of take. The big point I make is that the FX30 isn’t really about “better image quality” versus something like an a7 IV. The 4K image is beautiful, you get 4K 24/30/60/120 (120 with a crop), and 10-bit 4:2:2 makes grading way easier, but plenty of Sony hybrids look amazing too. What separates the FX30 is how it functions as a video-first camera: mounting points all over the body, multiple record buttons, better video-focused controls, a built-in fan, full-size HDMI, dual card slots, and my favorite—loading 16 user LUTs right into the camera. Bottom line: if you’re a filmmaker/videographer (especially earlier in your career or on a tighter budget), the FX30 is absolutely still worth it in 2025.
