In this video I break down my Sony a6400 filmmaking rig — basically everything I need to get clean, cinematic-looking footage without spending a crazy amount. I start with the a6400 itself, because for the price I’m still surprised how nice the footage looks. It’s not perfect (4K is limited to 24fps, slow motion is 1080p, and the autofocus isn’t on the level of newer bodies), but since I built this as a cinema-style rig with a fully manual lens, autofocus isn’t a dealbreaker for how I shoot. From there I walk through the core pieces that make the setup work: the Sirui Nightwalker 24mm T1.2 (super affordable, softer and more filmic than a typical photo lens), a mist filter for extra dreamy vibes, and the cage/handles/monitor setup that makes manual focus and handheld shooting way easier. The big upgrade for usability is adding an external monitor (for focus peaking and exposure tools like false color) and, if your budget allows, V-mount power so you’re not swapping batteries every 30 minutes. I also show optional add-ons like rails, a baseplate, a follow focus, and a side handle — basically a “bare bones” build plus smart upgrades depending on what you need.
