About This Video

When it comes to making high-quality videos, I genuinely think good audio is one of the most important things to get right—sometimes even more than the camera. In this video, I break down the big question everyone asks: which microphones sound the best, and which mic should you actually buy? And the key takeaway is that those two answers aren’t always the same, because it depends on what you shoot. I walk through the main mic types creators actually use: shotgun mics (directional, great when pointed at your subject), wireless lav mics (omnidirectional, great if you’re moving around or filming multiple people), and dynamic mics like the Shure SM7B (the podcast/voiceover standard when it’s close to your mouth). Then I do real-world audio comparisons with a few popular options—cheap and expensive—mounted on-camera, boomed closer, and used for voiceovers. After spending way too much money testing this stuff, my personal favorite for voiceover/talking-head is the Shure SM7B, easily. But for most people, I’d recommend a solid mid-range shotgun mic like the Rode VideoMic NTG, because it’s versatile and sounds amazing without forcing you into a full XLR setup. At the end of the day, buy gear for your use case—running-and-gun, interviews, or studio-style YouTube—and you’ll be way happier with the result.
