About This Video

In this video I’m testing Motion: Fractal by Excite Audio and basically asking the question: is this the real competitor Output Portal has been waiting on since 2019? I break down the interface, the preset browser (which is honestly one of my favorite parts), and the whole “dots + six sliders” workflow. Then I open the side tabs where the real sound design happens—grain algorithms, gate controls, and the drag-and-drop system that lets you assign parameters to those six knobs so you can automate everything fast. After the overview, I put it to the test in two real cookups. First I take an ambient melody I already had and use Motion Fractal to add grain, movement, and atmosphere—because that’s where this plugin really shines for me: turning a slightly boring idea into something super interesting in minutes. Then I cook up a second beat from scratch with a synth-inspired vibe (Mike Dean direction), using Motion Fractal to make dry synths feel wide and alive, while still leaving space for the mix and vocals. At the end I talk pricing (Full vs Light), why it’s cheaper than Portal and Arturia EFX FRAGMENTS, and my honest pros/cons: great presets, lots of options, stable, but it can be a bit CPU heavy and slightly confusing if you’re new. I don’t think it will “end Portal” in popularity, but as an alternative—especially on a budget—it’s definitely one of the best granular FX moves right now.
