In this video I set up a straight-up 60-minute beat challenge with two simple rules: I have to finish the entire beat (melody, drums, mixing, arranging—everything) before the timer hits zero, and all melodic elements have to come from the hardware synths behind me. No VSTs, no extra instruments—just the real synths. I start by recording a main melody in a couple takes, then I build it out with a thicker version that adds low notes, plus some quick vibe moves like reverb and chorus to make the synth sit wider and feel more alive. From there I layer in bass on the Poly D, which is analog, so I’m literally tuning notes manually every time I want to use it. I record two bass layers—one filtered for a smoother tone and one with the filter opened up for a more aggressive, high-end-forward sound. To keep the hook interesting, I also manipulate the existing synth audio with Motion Fractal (think Output Portal-style warping) and then focus on making the beat hit as hard as possible with distorted, hard-hitting drums.
