About This Video

In this video I finally tried FL Studio after being an Ableton user to the core for more than half a decade. I hit some of the hardest beat block of my life for almost two weeks—couldn’t make drums, couldn’t make melodies, nothing worked—so I downloaded the FL Studio demo and started experimenting. Almost instantly I came up with a simple beat (drum MIDI + a pre-made melody), and that was enough to make me go, “okay… maybe I actually need to learn this.” So I jumped into a full cookup from basically zero FL experience and just did it my way. I build the melody with Analog Lab layers, then record a fat synth bass live (and even mess with a tuner + chopping to get it sitting right). I add accents from my Synth Palace X kits, then move into drums—snare layers, clap, hats, and some small variations, plus a little bit of note panning inside the piano roll (which is super dope). I also remove the limiter on the master, throw on Fruity Soft Clipper because it’s legendary, and automate Halftime on a synth for arrangement movement. My biggest complaint: the routing/mixer workflow felt unnecessarily complex compared to Ableton, and my project got chaotic fast. Still, the final result came out heat, and FL surprised me with how seamless some parts felt.
