About This Video

There are a lot of overhyped and overused VSTs out there, but in this video I’m testing a real gem that a lot of producers might overlook: Icons by ToneWorx Audio. It’s a creative multi‑effects plugin with 16 effect units total, and you can run up to four effects at the same time. I break down how the dry/wet works, how the XY pad lets you balance the effect volumes against each other, and I run through factory presets to show what it actually does in a real session. After that, I cook up a full beat in Ableton Live 12 and use Icons to add grain layers, transform melodies with filtering/pitching, and push things into that “hardware FX” type of vibe. I also stack processing (yes, I even threw a second Icons on the same track), add keys, sub, low piano realism tips, vocals, and then finish it off with punchy trap drums and an 808. My honest take: Icons isn’t doing something that has never existed before, but it executes the multi‑FX idea really well and the sound quality surprised me—especially on the creative effects and presets. My main criticisms are the UI (not knowing what effect/parameters you’re on) and the weird limitation of effect group combinations. Price-wise it sits around $49.99, and I’d say it’s a great value closer to $35, but still fair if you’ll actually use it.
