I’m a bit of a connoisseur of horror, sci-fi, and weird fiction—think The King in Yellow, At the Mountains of Madness, and I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream—so I wanted to convince you that one of the best cosmic-horror settings ever written is hiding in plain sight: Warhammer 40,000. Not the usual “spooky Tyranids” or “the Warp is scary” stuff either. In this video I go right back to the beginning of the universe, where star gods drift through the void like parasites, gods get hurled into existence, and the galaxy is still young enough to feel wrong. I break down the origin story of 40k through the tragedy of the Necrontyr: a doomed race born under a hideous, cancer-riddled star, who discover the life-filled Old Ones and hate them for everything they were denied. After their humiliating defeat in the first War in Heaven, they reach into the void and make contact with the C’tan—then get absolutely played by the Deceiver. The “gift” of immortality becomes biotransference: soulless metal bodies, their spirits stripped out and eaten. From there it’s revenge, god-shattering weapons, C’tan shards locked in tesseract labyrinths, and finally the Great Sleep—60 million years of waiting to wake up in the grimdark far future.
