About This Video

I’ll be honest: for years, priming was my least favourite part of painting. I’ve lost count of the times I’ve spent ages building or converting a “perfect little miniature,” only to take it outside and turn it into a thick, cakey, chalky disaster with one tragic scush of the can. So in this video I’m fixing that. I walk you through my tried-and-tested routine for getting smooth primer coats—warming the can in warm (not hot!) water, shaking the hell out of it, and spraying at roughly 15cm in controlled sweeps so you don’t blast details or dry the pigment mid-air. Then we crank priming from “necessary evil” into “actually cool.” I show how I use zenithal priming (top-down directional sprays) not just for light mapping, but for speed-painting foundations and instant blends. We hit easy shaded metallics, a ridiculous blue/pink synthwave glow, a punchy yellow armour recipe that uses pink to create rich orange midtones, and smooth purple-to-pink blends that are basically begging to become Emperor’s Children. Finally, I share primer recipes for skin tones (including warm tan and spooky undead vibes) plus a fast, contrasty green skin/armour setup for my fellow orc and goblin enjoyers. The whole point is simple: stop dreading priming—use it to give your minis a unique, blended boost before you’ve even touched a paintbrush.
