About This Video

Having kids around is always a bunch of fun, and while I don’t have any children of my own, I do have a lot of experience teaching kids how to paint miniatures—from my years running paint-and-take tables with Games Workshop, to running proper workshops for ages 5–12 in an art gallery for our documentary. In this video, I’m not trying to tell you how to raise your child (because I don’t know), but I am showing you a method that makes miniature painting actually accessible, memorable, and—most importantly—fun for little humans. The big idea is: stop handing them a tiny, fiddly Space Marine and expecting box art. Mini painting is hard, and that “impossible task” feeling can bum them out fast. Instead, I do a quick 3–5 minute chat about storytelling with colors, then I start them on a coloring sheet of the mini so they can plan a scheme and build that “color in the lines” dexterity in 2D first. After that, I give them paints, a brush, and a bigger, more expressive mini (Rascal Town is perfect for this), and I mostly let them go ham—while I keep the vibes high with questions, encouragement, and (optionally) a show-and-tell that builds confidence and pride.
