About This Video

In this video, I show you how to customize a folder icon in Windows 10, step-by-step, with no fluff. I jump over to my desktop so you can see it in real time—one folder with the default icon, and a couple where I’ve already changed the icons. If you’re trying to make important folders stand out (or just want your desktop to look less boring), this is one of the quickest tweaks you can do. All you do is right-click the folder, hit Properties, and go to the Customize tab (it’s the last tab across the top). Down near the bottom you’ll see Folder icons—click Change Icon, then either pick from the built-in icons or hit Browse to use your own file. If you go custom, your icon needs to be 256x256 and converted to the .ico extension (just Google an ICO converter—there are free ones). Click OK, then Apply, then OK again, and you’re done. One thing to know: once you change the icon, Windows won’t show that folder contents preview anymore.
