What’s going on good people—EVF here, Mr. RemoteLife. In this one I tried a quick iMac storage hack for my 24-inch iMac (the blue M1 model). Even with the 1TB spec, it fills up fast, so I’ve been running macOS on the internal drive and pushing my home folders to a 2TB external setup. The idea with this dock was simple: drop my NVMe into the bottom of the dock and get extra ports (SD, USB-A, and USB-C) while keeping my storage fast and clean under the iMac. So I unboxed it, matched it up to the iMac color (they actually got the blue pretty close), and then I did real-world speed tests against what I was already using—my Thunderbolt enclosure. The results were the whole story: my Thunderbolt setup was “pretty fast,” but the dock’s speeds were significantly lower and basically unusable for how I work. Since this drive holds shared home folders for me, my wife, and my son, I can’t comfortably edit high-def video or mix audio when the storage takes that big of a hit. The takeaway: USB-C is not Thunderbolt 4, and that difference can cost you about 3x performance. I’m sending this dock back and sticking with a 40Gbps Thunderbolt enclosure until I find a dock that doesn’t kill speed.
