About This Video

What’s going on guys—EBS here, Mr. RemoteLife. In this one I’m walking you through a real chevron flooring install and the little “template” hack I figured out to get perfect cuts around door jambs, closets, and thresholds. The goal was simple: carry the wood straight through spaces without using transitions. In my opinion, transitions in every doorway are the easy way…and also the sloppy way. So I show how I plan the pattern (skinny side vs fat side), why you’ve gotta pre-plan when a hallway is basically the length of a full board, and how I use a template piece to mark cuts so the bottom edge stays crisp. I also keep it 100%—I messed up. I hammered a row in and realized my notched threshold piece couldn’t fit anymore, so I had to rip it back out and I wasted two boards. That’s real DIY: players mess up, then we make it right. The fix was building out from the closet, meeting in the middle, and using two pieces at the doorway so you’re not left with a super frail sliver that’ll fall apart when you tap it in. To make boards slide easier in tight spots, I share a quick trick: a Dollar Tree travel spray bottle with a few pumps of foaming hand soap and water—spray it and the board will slide back through the joint way easier. And if you’re doing chevron, protect those corners—this stuff chips like a mofo, so I use a tapping block setup so I’m not destroying edges mid-floor.
