In today’s homeschool Q&A, I’m talking through something that feels really big for a lot of us: homeschooling in high school. I share what I’m doing (and still figuring out) with credits, transcripts, diplomas, and extracurriculars as a Canadian homeschool mom in Ontario. For context, I’m homeschooling five kids (15 down to 7), I’m a second-generation homeschooler, and my oldest is just finishing grade 10—so we’re right in the middle of these questions in real life. I explain why my kids won’t be getting the Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) the same way public school students do, and why I’m okay with that. I’m planning to make my own diploma as “teacher/mom,” and I’ll be putting together transcripts based on careful records of courses, subjects, and books—especially for grades 11 and 12 when it matters most for applications. I also share why I think we can overcomplicate high school, how post-secondary schools are more used to homeschool applicants now, and why I don’t see a benefit to pushing kids to graduate early. We also chat about what my kids do outside the home (swimming, baseball, ballet, swim club, and a basketball drop-in), how adding a fifth baby impacted our homeschool rhythm, and what I’d do if a child asked to attend public school.
