About This Video

In this video I take a Godot game that has basically zero art and turn it into a fully customized, animated version—without me suddenly becoming good at 2D art. I’ve always wanted to build a “cat versus dogs” game (kind of a waves survivor), but my art skills are… not it. So I use a workflow that starts with concept images (I used ChatGPT, but use whatever you like) and then I feed a clean reference into GodMode, which can generate sprite animations from that single image. I show what makes a good reference image (plain background, side view, not too many details) versus a bad one (too much noise like rocks/dust that confuses the tool). Inside GodMode I pick side-scrolling, choose an animation like running loop, keep auto-repose on, and I’m picky about the first frame because the whole animation is based on it. Then I download the sprite sheet (not just the MP4), remove the background in an editor (I used Photoshop’s magic eraser), and import everything into Godot. Finally, I set up AnimatedSprite2D with SpriteFrames, add frames from the sprite sheet, tune FPS (like 25–35), disable looping for attack, and even trim “prep” frames to make the attack snappier. For idle, I show a quick trick: just steal a good-looking frame from another animation. Then I wire it in code with a simple state-based animation switch (attack/idle/walk).
