About This Video

In this episode of my “Learning pottery in 30 days” series, I take you with me into a pottery bootcamp in Jingdezhen—basically an intense sampler platter of techniques taught by Masters I genuinely feel honored to learn from. We start the evening before Day 5, and then it’s straight into day-by-day studio life: sculpting, qinghua (blue-and-white), bas-relief, and all the little problem-solving moments that come with learning fast in a new environment. As the days stack up, I move through attaching handles and spouts, enamel painting, slab building, glazing (plus raku), and then molding and casting. Toward the end, I’m trimming and wrapping up what becomes Day 10 of bootcamp (Day 14 in my overall timeline), and then I finally take a rest day. My biggest takeaway is how much range there is inside “ceramics”—every process has its own rhythm, tools, and mindset, and being in Jingdezhen makes that feel extra real. If you’re pottery-curious or already making work, I hope this gives you a clear peek into how the Jingdezhen Masters approach technique, repetition, and craft.
