About This Video

I start this diary on ceramics market day in Jingdezhen—wandering, looking, and letting myself be a little obsessed with what other makers are doing. I share a small market haul and talk through what I’m noticing: shapes, proportions, and the kinds of surfaces that keep pulling me back in. It’s one of those days that reminds me why I chose this apprentice life in the first place—being surrounded by clay all the time makes your eyes sharper, even when you’re not at the wheel. Then I go back to the studio and intentionally “return to small.” Instead of forcing big forms, I focus on smaller throws to rebuild consistency and confidence, and I let myself experiment with form without making it a huge emotional thing. There’s also a porcelain repair moment with Master Du, which is such a good reminder that skill isn’t just throwing—knowing how to fix, handle, and respect porcelain is part of becoming a better potter. I end with another fun throwing session, and honestly, that’s the point of this video: falling back in love with the process, one centered lump at a time.
