About This Video

In this video I’m continuing my crash course in throwing off the hump the Jingdezhen way—following Chinese porcelain master Zhan Shaolin’s handbook (part 2). I’m basically inviting you into my week at the wheel, starting with Day 4: I walk through how I throw a doulibei (that bamboo-hat-shaped cup) and a shuibei (water cup), then I pause to reflect on what felt better, what still needs reps, and the little adjustments that make the forms actually behave. On Day 5 I keep building the skill set with a bowl, a flower vase, and a gongdaobei (fairness cup). Throwing off the hump is fast and efficient, but it only works when your centering, opening, and pull are consistent—so I focus on the sequence and the mindset: repeatable motions, clean transitions, and staying calm when the clay starts doing its own thing. If you’re just starting or you’re coming back to refresh, you can follow along piece by piece and treat this like a structured practice week in Jingdezhen.
