In this food vlog I’m taking you with me to Farro in Auckland (Tāmaki Makaurau) for a proper New Zealand supermarket tour—well, more like a mini supermarket / food market experience than a big commercial store. This was my first time visiting this particular Farro on the North Shore (and on a Saturday, so yes… it could be busy), and I went in fully intending to pick up a few naughty treats while also seeing what makes Farro different to places like Pak’nSave, Countdown and New World. One of the big reasons I like Farro is their ethos around waste. I share the stats I noted down so I didn’t get them wrong: less than 1% of food waste goes to landfill, over 80% goes to stock feed through Eco Stock, around 10% is composted, and roughly 5–8% goes to people in need via Fair Food. Inside, I show you the bakery section (hello cinnamon donuts and sourdough), unusual produce like lion’s mane mushrooms, a really nice fish counter with a handy NZ fish guide, and a dangerously good sweet section (meringues, puddings, crumbles…the lot). I also chat through what I’d actually buy, what I find a bit pricey, and the things I personally don’t love (matcha tastes like dirt to me, and I can’t stand mac and cheese).
