In this video I’m in Wellington, New Zealand, trying afternoon tea at the InterContinental Hotel for the first time ever (at any InterContinental worldwide, actually). The hotel’s in such a prime spot right on the waterfront, and because there are renovations downstairs, the high tea is currently being served in the Level 7 executive club lounge. Honestly, it’s really plush and cozy up there, and they reserved me a lovely booth with a harbour view — the customer care was amazing. The menu had a fun twist because it was themed around the World of Wearable Art (WOW), so it wasn’t super traditional — which I actually enjoyed. On the savoury side, I loved the tuna tartar with grapefruit and pomegranate (so colourful and really nicely tart), and I also liked the smoked salmon mousse with beetroot in the little croissant, plus the ginger roast chicken finger sandwich (even though the bread felt a bit dry). My least favourite savoury was the endive “boat” with walnut and mustard fruit. For sweets, the mandarin scone with espresso buttercream surprised me — it was drier and more biscuit-like, but the flavour was lovely and the coffee was very faint (thankfully, because I don’t like coffee). The champagne yuzu macaron was a bit dry, but the passion fruit choux and the mango mousse were the standouts. Overall, for $59 NZD I thought it was pretty reasonable, and I’d definitely come back.
