This one was a full-send Montana winter mission—Odi and I chased a storm up into the backcountry and ended up driving through some of the deepest, fluffiest powder I’ve personally seen out here. The road basically disappeared, and after breaking fresh tracks for a couple miles I hit a downed tree and had to make the smart call. Running solo in snow that’s getting deeper by the minute (with another 12–14 inches in the forecast) is not the time to get stubborn, especially when there aren’t many turnouts and you don’t want to start spinning tires and digging yourself a hole. I dropped into a wide pull-off I’d marked on OnX, grabbed firewood (dead standing is the move in winter), and got camp rolling while the snow kept stacking. Dinner was simple and perfect: Montana elk spaghetti over the fire, plus a little bowl for Odi—he was posted up warming in the truck because deep, wet snow absolutely cooks him, and his snow pants are non-negotiable. By morning, everything was buried—my awning was sagging under a solid foot of heavy snow, the Super Pacific X1 was holding strong, and the Truma had the tent sitting at like 70°. Epic conditions, but the takeaway is the same: be patient, don’t rush, and play it safe when you’re out there alone.
