In this one, Odi and I head out to a new spot in Montana for a solo spring truck camp. I kept the intro pretty quiet on purpose because this place was just peaceful—minus a little shooting in the distance and the fact there are roads closer than you’d think. Spring is definitely showing up out here: snow melting off, birds chirping, and that first green starting to pop. It’s the kind of trip that makes me even more fired up for Montana summer nights. For dinner I kept it simple and solid—steak, fresh broccoli, and potatoes. The steak wasn’t my best (it did the whole Colorado-to-freezer-to-Montana shuffle), but everything still hit the spot. Later I did what I’d call a top-tier camp dessert: a brown sugar cinnamon Pop-Tart warmed in foil by the fire. Before bed I mentioned the northern lights might show, but with the moonlight it was a “we’ll see” kind of night. Morning was classic spring Montana: mid-50s later in the day, but high-20s/low-30s early with frost and dew. I took my time with coffee and made the easiest breakfast burritos using a Mountain House breakfast skillet, tortillas, and pepper jack. Honestly, it’s a game-changer for quick mornings when you still want to eat good and enjoy the woods.
