Yes—you can absolutely use LightBurn without a laser connected. In this tutorial I create a manual “dummy” device so you still get a proper grid and workspace. That way you can design and learn LightBurn from inside the house instead of being connected to a machine in the garage.

I start by opening LightBurn, clicking OK to get past the first screen, and then using the “Your Device List” popup. Choose “Create Manually” and you can build a placeholder device. It’s perfect for learning the software while you’re waiting on delivery.

In the video I select the GRBL option when creating the device manually. If you already know what laser you’re buying, you can pull the proper settings from the manufacturer. If you can’t be bothered with that yet, GRBL is a simple way to get started with a dummy setup.

I choose USB during the setup. Even though you’re not actually connecting anything right now, it lets you complete the device creation and get into the workspace. The main point is getting a usable grid so you can start working.

I use 400mm by 400mm as a good standard starting point. That gives you a realistic engraving space to play with and practice layouts. You can always change it later once you know your actual machine’s dimensions.

After you click Finish, the device appears in your device list down in LightBurn. In my example it shows up as “My Laser.” When you add a real laser later, it’ll appear in that same place.
