About This Video

In this video I show you two simple ways to mask text in LightBurn using the Apply Mask to Image feature. I start with a JPEG image on an Image layer, then I create a single letter (I use an “A”) with the Text tool. The key step is turning that text into a Tool Layer (I click T1 or T2), because masking works off tool layers. Once the text is a tool layer, I move it over the image, select everything, right-click, and choose Apply Mask to Image. From there, you can non-destructively move and scale the background image, and you can also resize the text mask to get the look you want. Then I show the inverse version: I keep the text as a tool layer, draw a rectangle (or any shape) around it, center everything, group it, and apply the mask again. This time the background engraves while the letter stays “blank,” which is a really clean effect. I also show how to add outlines for cutting (or a separate line pass) by switching the masked shape from a tool layer back to a regular color layer like red, so you can preview exactly what will engrave and what will outline.
