About This Video

In this video I show you exactly how I cut around an image in LightBurn—using a PNG butterfly as the example. When you import an image like this, LightBurn puts it on an Image layer, and you’ll notice you can’t just switch that layer to Fill or Line. So if you want the butterfly to engrave and also have a clean cut line around it, you need to create a vector outline first. My go-to method is simple: right-click the image and choose Trace Image. I’ll hit Fade Image so I can clearly see the outline I’m chasing, then (if needed) tweak options like Cut Off Threshold and Smoothness to clean things up before clicking OK. LightBurn creates a new Line layer with the trace, and from there I hide the original image so I can inspect the traced lines. The trace usually includes extra internal lines, so I ungroup, select just the outer outline, change it to a different color (I use red), hide that outer line, and delete the leftover internal bits. Turn everything back on and you’ve got a proper engrave layer for the image and a separate line layer that will cut around it.
