I’ve owned the Fujifilm X-E5 for over six weeks now and I bought it with my own money before a photography trip to Europe—so this is proper hands-on use, not a spec-sheet read. The whole idea of the X-E line (for me) is that perfect middle ground: compact, timeless rangefinder vibes like the X100 series, but with the flexibility and power closer to the X-T series. On the trip I travelled light, left my Nikon ZF behind, and used the X-E5 for both photo and video—and honestly, it’s almost perfect. In this review I break down what I love (that 40MP X-Trans 5 sensor from the X-T5/H2, the dynamic range, the flexibility in RAW, the surprisingly useful film simulation dial, and the fact they squeezed IBIS into this tiny body). I also cover what frustrates me: the hidden 6.2K crop, the clunky photo-to-video switching that can lock you into 8-bit with a baked-in film sim, and a real technical issue I hit with the 18–55mm causing a shutdown warning. Then I finish with the uncomfortable bit—value. No weather sealing, an outdated EVF, and a huge price jump mean I scored it a generous 92/100, but I still think most people should consider an X100VI or an X-T5 instead.
