My real-world approach is simple: I shoot Aperture Priority, keep a minimum shutter of 1/200, ride exposure comp, and choose aperture based on the scene—wide open for messy backgrounds, f2.8–f5.6 for context in portraits, and usually f8 for landscapes/street. And yes—understanding this properly can even save you money, because if you live around f8, a “cheap” kit lens can absolutely hold up.
