Yesterday I went down to Sydney for a single day of photography and limited myself to one focal length: 43mm. I love 43mm because it’s a really natural perspective—studies show it’s close to what our eyes see (once you ignore the blurry peripheral stuff). In this video I walk you through my thought process in real time: why I choose certain frames, how I simplify scenes, and what I’m looking for with light, layers, and little moments—like waiting for someone to step into the frame or a seagull to land in just the right spot. I’m shooting on the Hasselblad X2D 100C, and you’ll see me use the XPan crop for a wider, more human-feeling view (we see more horizontally than vertically, after all). I also talk about how I’m composing with horizons, how a tiny bit of elevation can completely fix a scene, and why I’ll sometimes shoot something “simple” if the texture and sidelight are doing the heavy lifting. Later, I break down how the 100MP files let me pull multiple compositions out of a single frame—43mm can become an 85mm-ish crop without falling apart. And I share my honest thoughts on Hasselblad’s free Phocus software vs Lightroom, especially when it comes to recovering highlights/shadows, color fidelity, and that really pleasing highlight-to-shadow roll-off.
