About This Video

In this motivational talk on imposter syndrome, I’m keeping it all the way real about how I used to wear a mask and try to be somebody I wasn’t. My idea of “reality” came from rap videos, movies, and what I saw on TV—money, girls, chains, rims, grills—so I chased that image. We was poor growing up, raised without my father, single mama, and I let that pain turn into a whole street persona. I started selling drugs at 18, packing pistols, and even robbing people at gunpoint because I was trying to live that “gangster” life that looked cool on the screen. But what I’m telling you is this: that toughness is often a facade. A lot of us copycat what we see because we don’t want people to know the real us, so we become imposters. I learned the hard way that the people I thought had my back didn’t have my back—at 22 I got busted with drugs in my car facing 10 years, and the drugs weren’t even mine… they were my “friends.” They didn’t bail me out, didn’t put money on my books, didn’t come see me—only my mom was there. My takeaway is simple: stop performing for people, stop hiding the pain, and let Jesus—the lover of my soul—be the One who defines you and heals what you’re trying to cover up.
