When dogs are off-leash at home, they have too many options to rehearse bad habits—chewing, barking, digging, ignoring you. The leash narrows the choices and teaches your dog to focus on you again. Then I teach “yes” and “no” the right way using a toy your dog really wants. I give a few verbal warnings (“nope”) and, if needed, a calm physical correction by guiding the leash to the side—no yanking, no frustration.
