Hey everyone, Cherie here, and welcome back to my channel and the Unboring Adulting Series! Subscribe to keep updated on content where I make adulting a little bit more...unboring... I just hit my two-year mark at Google as a Communications Associate in APAC Marketing, and it's been quite the journey filled with invaluable lessons about navigating the early stages of my career. If you've ever felt lost in the job world or battled imposter syndrome, trust me, I've been right there with you. As I celebrate my Googleversary, I wanted to share my top 5 biggest career lessons I've learned during my time at Google, tailored specifically for fresh grads, early-career professionals, and job hunters alike. This video is packed with practical advice, insights into Google careers, and strategies for overcoming imposter syndrome. Like, comment, subscribe, and connect with me on LinkedIn if you'd like :) Lesson 1: Embrace the Pre-work Hustle! Remember those days leading up to your first job when you could have been honing skills or exploring enriching experiences? I wish I had started French classes earlier, tried new sports like snowboarding and surfing, or explored more creative outlets. My advice to you: Dive into new hobbies or skills like coding, public speaking, or finance. Expand your horizons through travel, whether backpacking or embracing different cultures. Consider starting your own YouTube channel or side hustle. Stepping beyond your comfort zone not only strengthens you but also unveils unexpected opportunities. Lesson 2: Nobody's Perfect: Embrace the Growth Mindset and Challenge Imposter Syndrome. We all start somewhere, and that's okay! There will be moments where you feel like you're "sucking" at something. Even the most confident people experience self-doubt—it's called imposter syndrome, and it affects everyone sometimes. But the key is to embrace a growth mindset. Focus on your strengths, celebrate your achievements, and learn from mistakes. Embrace the challenge! With the right attitude, you can overcome any obstacle. Lesson 3: Finding Your Fit: Be Yourself, Trust the Process. Finding the right job isn't just about your growth—it's about a good culture and role fit. Trust your gut and find a company where you feel like you belong. Remember, it's better to be part of a team where you can be yourself and contribute meaningfully than to force a fit that won't make you happy. Lesson 4: People Skills: The Superpower of Learning, Success, and Happiness. The best teachers aren't always found in textbooks. Be open to learning from everyone, and don't be afraid to ask questions. People skills are what ultimately get work done! Being able to work well with people makes work much more enjoyable and fulfilling. Your ability to communicate effectively, build connections, and collaborate sets you apart and leads to a happier life. Lesson 5: Work-Life Balance. Starting work made me quickly realize its impact on every aspect of life. It's crucial to prioritize what matters most in each area as you navigate through different life stages. Remember, building work relationships is great, but setting boundaries is crucial. Disconnect after hours and make time for what truly matters outside the office. Thanks for tuning in, and until next time, keep embracing the adventure of working +adulting!

About This Video

In this video, I’m celebrating my 2-year Googleversary (yes, two whole years!) as a Communications Associate in the APAC Marketing team, and I’m sharing five of the biggest career lessons I’ve learned along the way. If you’re a fresh grad, early-career professional, or job hunter who’s ever felt lost, overwhelmed, or like you’re the only one struggling—trust me, I’ve been there. Transitioning from student/intern to full-time was honestly a shock to my system: higher expectations, less hand-holding, and a lot of moments where I questioned if I was good enough. I talk about why you should embrace the “pre-work hustle” while you’re still in university (learn skills, try hobbies, travel, even start a side hustle like YouTube), and why a growth mindset matters when imposter syndrome hits—because nobody starts off perfect, and I definitely didn’t. I also share how finding the right role is about fit (not just growth), why people skills are wildly underrated for learning, success, and happiness, and how work-life balance doesn’t happen automatically—you have to intentionally build routines that protect your health, home, relationships, and hobbies. Basically: don’t let work rule your whole life, because it’s not the only pillar that makes life awesome.
