Hey homies, I'm back with an exciting new love—surfing with my Seasters in Canggu, Bali! I joined the Nov'23 batch of Haikini Surf Camp, surfing for 2 hours daily over 5 consecutive days. It was a beautiful, inspiring, and humbling experience led by Beckie (founder of Haikini!), learning alongside with Seasters: Shumin, Shuyi, Jo, Gabby, Paula + special mention to Jojo, who took all our videos for surf analysis! A big thank you to my coach, Agus, and all the instructors for keeping us safe and alive! Surfing can be dangerous (and intimidating!), so if you're looking for a safe place to learn with a group of other strong and brave girlies, check out Haikini's Surf Camps at Haikini.co (or ask me on my Instagram at cherie.paw@ for more info, I'll reply if I can!) Stay safe out there surfing, babes! 🫶 Here's my experience: Day 1 - I've always been a confident swimmer, but the huge waves and swallowing water while tumbling with the board made me really stressed and scared! My footing wasn't centered on the board, so I couldn't really stand up and kept falling. I spent more time paddling than surfing and felt demotivated. Day 2 - I felt much better finally getting my footing! It was now a bit more centered, allowing me to stand up more steadily. However, the beach was super crowded with rather aggressive tourists. 2 surfers came dangerously close to hitting me. Luckily, my instructor came to my aid and also advised them to surf more safely and considerately. My system got a little shocked.... :') Day 3 - My best surfing day! We went to a quieter spot with smaller waves. I laughed a bunch and felt incredible when I managed to stand up, and even balance for 20 seconds. Paddling was much easier, my body was getting used to the ocean, and I could really enjoy the weather! Day 4 - It was calmer with smaller waves and a relaxed crowd. I focused on basics and improving my balance! I could stand on the board much more comfortably and confidently, for up to around 40 seconds. There was a close call with a beginner surfer, and a few girls got hurt. I also had to clear my clogged ears after a couple of days. Day 5 - It was a peaceful and safe day. All the girls stood up while surfing, and I felt proud of our strong group of Seasters! If you're wondering where our adorable bikinis, they're from Haikini—ethically made bikinis from Bali that stay on! I adore the brand, their products, and the wonderful community—take a look at their site Haikini.co and join our group of Seasters 🏄‍♀️🏄‍♀️🏄‍♀️🏄‍♀️🏄‍♀️🏄‍♀️ TLDR; If you've watched my first attempt at surfing without lessons in Australia (https://youtu.be/RFekr_JMYY0?si=R08675zlHhsy-ckx&t=415) you'll be able to tell that this trip with surf lessons & surf analyses has been a HUGE upgrade in my ability and experience.... #surf #surfing #canggusurf #balisurf #haikini #vlog

About This Video

I’m taking you along for my very first surf lessons in Canggu, Bali with my Seasters at Haikini Surf Camp (Nov ’23). We surfed 2 hours a day for 5 days straight, and honestly… it was equal parts beautiful, inspiring, and humbling. I came in thinking I’d be fine because I’m a confident swimmer, but the waves, wipeouts, and swallowing water while tumbling with the board stressed me out so much on Day 1. I spent more time paddling than actually surfing, and I was this close to feeling demotivated. Over the week, things started to click—especially once my footing got more centered and I stopped fighting the ocean so hard. We did surf analysis (thank you Jojo for filming everything), and my coach helped me focus on finding the “pocket” of the wave, looking forward (not down), and staying low for better control. We even talked through the mental side: it’s often scarier in your head than it is in real life. By the later days, I could go left and right a bit more to avoid people, felt way more comfortable with currents (literally learning to surrender), and I was proud of myself for not giving up. Day 5 wrapped with everyone tired and a little banged up (one reef incident), but safe—and I left Canggu with a brand new love for surfing.
