In honour of the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation in Canada (Sept 30), I’m pleased to present this table runner called Timeless Teachings. My husband is a member of the Mi’kmaq Nation and his family history and traditions are an important part of his lived experience. His cousin recently asked me if I would explore working with some traditional Mi’kmaq designs to make quilted items – and this pattern is the first of those projects. The pattern of the Mi’kmaq Star is easily recognizable to quilters as an eight-point star. Changing the placement of the colours makes all the difference, so designing a quilting project with this image felt very natural. The meaning and symbolism are emphasised in the colour placement. The free pattern, available on my website at: www.bitsandpiecesquilting.com includes the instructions to make a two-colour option of this design. Enjoy! About This Video

In this video I’m sharing a very special table runner project called Timeless Teachings, created in honour of the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation (Sept 30) here in Canada. My husband Jason (Mi’kmaq) joins me to explain the history behind the design: the traditional eight-point Mi’kmaq Star, an image found as a petroglyph near Bedford, Nova Scotia and rooted in teachings connected to the four directions and the colours white, yellow, red, and black. Hearing that context matters, and I’m grateful to Ben for inviting me to explore how this meaningful design could translate into fabric and quilted art. From there, I walk you through how I made the runner using super practical construction: 4" squares to create two-at-a-time half square triangles that square up to 3 1/2" (3" finished). I show my layout strategy (that center “chevron” alignment is the key), the spacers that help the star feel like it radiates, and how I assemble it in three simple rows. I also share a two-colour alternative (hello, winter star vibes) for anyone who wants the look in a different palette. To finish, I keep the quilting modern with walking-foot straight lines and echo quilting—clean, graphic, and perfect for this design.
