Welcome to the first Quilters’ Challenge, and Brenda’s prompt for all of us was “Florals.” The second I heard it, my brain went straight to tulips—partly because my dad was born in the Netherlands (hello, tulip obsession), and partly because Ottawa’s spring tulip festival is basically a mood. I went hunting online for a tulip quilt block that had the right shape, but also felt scrappy and fun—not fussy paper piecing—and I landed on a fantastic free tulip pattern from Quilted Delights. In this video I walk you through how I pulled scraps for the tulip tops, leaves, and stems (and how I used a “whoops-I-bought-it-twice” blue background instead of white). I show the string-piecing math that gets you to the right widths, how I use my Easy Angle ruler to cut the diagonals (and what to do if you don’t have one), plus a few practical tips for sewing those triangles without stretching the bias. I also share how I adjusted the pattern slightly by leaving my blocks at 12" instead of trimming to 11 3/4"—and yes, I loved the blocks so much I made enough for two baby quilts. Six blocks, no sashing, and a whole lot of cheerful spring colour play.
