Four Colour Scrappy Plaid!!! Free Pattern

This simple pattern is all about colour selection and placement. The blocks are simple to make and with a bit of attention to how you press your pieces, everything will nest together. I had hoped it would be a real stash-buster, but it actually uses a lot of background fabrics rather than coloured scraps. But, it was great to use up all the bits and pieces of white background fabrics I had in the collection. About This Video

In this video I’m making my Four Colour Scrappy Plaid quilt (okay, it’s probably more of an argyle, but we’re going with it) and sharing the free pattern. The block itself is super, super simple—a nine-patch style layout with your coloured prints running down the diagonal and scrappy background in the other spots. The real “work” is in colour selection and placement: I recommend choosing two darker colours and two lighter colours, plus a background. I went with two blues, a green, and a yellow, and I’ll show you how I auditioned fabrics, built a cohesive pull, and even made a reject pile for anything that read too muddy, too teal, or too “medium” to behave. I also walk you through how I sort and use scraps (I save 2", 1 1/2", and 1" pieces), and how I start with the tiniest bits first. You can sew true nine-patches, or speed things up by using 2" x 3 1/2" bricks for the background in a couple of spots. The other big takeaway is pressing strategy—if you press with intention, your seams will nest beautifully when you assemble the rows. My final layout is 12 blocks across by 16 down, and even though it uses more background than I expected, it’s a fantastic way to use up those “bits and pieces” of white and near-white neutrals while still making a bold, scrappy statement.
