Today I’m bringing you into my sewing room for a big update: after a lot of research, emails, phone calls, and (honestly) a bit of a roller coaster, I bought a new machine. My Juki broke down, and I truly appreciated the 150–160 of you who shared advice and experience. I went into my local shop here in Ottawa (Ottawa Sewing Centre) with real fabric and a little quilt sandwich and spent about 45 minutes actually sewing—changing thread, winding bobbins, and testing the things I care about most for quilting. I landed on the Brother PQ1600S. It’s not “all caps WOW” compared to my Juki, but it’s a definite small wow—and that’s enough when it comes with the security of local service and available parts. I unbox it with you, go through the accessories (including a darning/free-motion foot), and talk about what matters to me: the solid metal base, wide throat plate, side-load bobbin, and cone thread setup. I also share what I’ve been doing while my machine was down—cutting future projects, paper piecing plans, and testing free-motion quilting—plus the big reminder that a fresh needle can completely change your stitch quality.
