Fun, simple and scrap friendly – this Four Patch and alternate block quilt is from a free pattern by Bonnie Hunter. It is so easy, but so dramatic! I love the chains of light and dark that dance down the quilt. I highly recommend this pattern and it is perfect for beginners. About This Video

In this video I’m making a donation quilt for Victoria’s Quilts Canada, using a bundle of donated fat quarters plus a one-yard cut of brown. I walk you through my decision process for choosing a free pattern that would actually work with what I had on hand (and with the rectangular sizes these charities need). I originally had other patterns in mind, but once I looked hard at fabric requirements and the construction, I switched directions and landed on Bonnie Hunter’s free pattern, “I Spy a Four Patch.” I show how I did the math (yes, I actually did math!) to land on a 52" x 64" quilt, including how many four patches and 4 1/2" feature squares I’d need. Then I take you through my cutting, my strip-piecing approach, and a few little efficiency tricks—like pressing to the dark, nesting seams, and cross-cutting stacked strip sets—while still keeping the focus on enjoying the process. For layout, I decided to lean into scrappy chaos instead of a more planned diagonal arrangement, and I love how the light and dark chains “dance” down the finished quilt. It’s deceptively simple, beginner-friendly, and incredibly effective.
