About This Video

This video is a true bucket list quilt for me: the Hunter’s Star. I’ve admired it for years, but the traditional method always felt intimidating—angled cuts, bias edges, and seams that can get fussy fast. So I did a little “research” (aka internet + pattern books) and landed on a simplified, scrap-friendly approach that still gives you that amazing star illusion. Once I made my first few test blocks, I knew this version was the one—especially when that key center intersection lines up and the arrows really pop. I walk you through my fabric choices (lots of batiks, plus a few non-batiks that still blend), how I manage contrast, and exactly what to cut for each block: one 4 1/2" light square, one 4 1/2" dark square, and eight 2 1/2" half-square triangles. I use my Easy Angle Ruler to cut HSTs efficiently from 2 1/2" strips—no squaring up if you cut slowly and sew accurately—then I show the layout details that make the block work when you rotate blocks into groups of four. You’ll also see me dive into my Northcott Canadiana scrap bin and turn leftover panel-quilt parts into a bold red-and-cream Hunter’s Star for Quilts of Valor. Two finishes, two totally different vibes, and a big reminder: aim for that center join, but don’t sweat the small stuff. Download the free pattern on my website so you can sew along with me.
