Join my mom and I as we use up some leftover pieces from a previous project and turn them into a bright and fun quilt. We've learned some lessons along the way, particularly about the importance of contrast, but the end result is a cute quilt with a fun camping theme. But this Disappearing Nine Patch Variation is definitely something to revisit in the future! About This Video

I’m Michelle from Bits & Pieces Quilting, and in this video I’m still at Mom’s house—still sewing from Mom’s stash—and we’re turning true leftovers into a bright, happy quilt. We found eight nine-patch blocks that were made years ago (we even spotted the original quilt in an old scrapbook), plus a big pile of camping prints. The plan that jumped out right away was a Disappearing Nine Patch variation, but with a twist: four-patch corners and “solid” (printed) pieces that end up reading like a built-in border once the blocks are cut and rotated. I walk through how I auditioned the layout in PreQuilt, hit a surprise (six blocks had orange in the alternate spots and only two had green), and then redrew the design until it felt balanced. Mom and I cobbled together enough matching pieces to make 20 blocks total for a 4x5 layout, finishing at about 52" x 65". I also show exactly how I cut the block—measuring 2 1/4" to slice each direction—and the simple swap I use to “make the nine patch disappear.” Along the way we learned (again) that contrast matters, but even with a slightly chaotic, scrappy look, this camping quilt top turned out super cute and absolutely worth revisiting with sharper contrast next time.
