Mom and I are sewing together again and this time we have created Dakota's Star for an enthusiastic Star Wars fan. Dakota's quilt has been sized to consider his unique circumstances and to draw attention to the things he loves. This is a re-sized, re-scaled and re-imagined version of our Carpenter's Wheel: https://youtu.be/0lHHgL1s8r4 You can download the free pattern from my websites at: www.bitsandpiecesquilting.com Follow me on Instagram at: bitspiecesquilt Shop My Favourite Items on Amazon! https://www.amazon.ca/shop/bitspiecesquilting Affiliate Disclosure ➤ As an Amazon Associate I may receive a small commission if you make a purchase, without any additional cost to you.

About This Video

Today Mom (Mary) and I are sewing our little hearts out on a very special quilt for a very special young man—Dakota—who is wheelchair and bed bound and absolutely loves Star Wars. We’re calling this one Dakota’s Star, and it’s a re-sized, re-scaled, and re-imagined version of my Carpenter’s Wheel (with the script completely flipped). The big goal was contrast: I pulled Star Wars prints, then put back anything with a white background or anything that read too “medium,” because I wanted that sharp pop against our mainly white/beige background fabric. I walk you through how I did the math in my notebook, how we resized the quilt to be a little shorter and a little narrower, and how the blocks are built from half-square triangles and 4 1/2" squares. I also share my fabric-mixing strategy—dividing every print into piles of four so each quadrant gets an even mix (hello, Darth Vader in every corner). I planned to use my usual webbing method for speed, but we had an epiphany: because this quilt is a rectangle (six across by seven blocks), you can’t just rotate a finished quadrant like you can with a square layout. In the end, the exploding star, the high contrast, and the “I-spy” chaos of the Star Wars prints make this quilt such a fun finish—and we even added rows of squares at the top and bottom to suit Dakota’s needs.
