I’m Michelle from Bits & Pieces Quilting, and in this video I’m heading out on a gorgeous spring morning (while Jason is painting the garage—poor Jason!) to the Ottawa Valley Quilt Guild’s Valley Blooms Quilt Show. I love community-based quilt shows because you get to see everything: first quilts with a few flaws (still beautiful), intermediate makes, and absolutely jaw-dropping, competition-level work. That shared passion is my favourite part, and I take you along to see what inspired me most. You’ll see stunning landscapes, a dramatic ballet dancer, a dream catcher with glorious colour and quilting, and a peacock and dahlia-style quilt that made me do a double take. The miniatures were completely mindblowing (those tiny half-square triangles!), and I share details like clever labeling ideas and design choices that really stood out. As a scrappy quilter, I zero in on the scrappy quilts—strip piecing, unexpected backgrounds, modern takes on traditional blocks like the lone star, and projects that make me want to go home and sew with my own fabric bits and pieces. I even test-drove a longarm… and then wisely walked away.
