Join me to make this simple but effective quilt that's perfect for scraps. I've chosen to use Canadian-themed fabric from Northcott, but a completely scrappy version of this would look fantastic! The free pattern will be available on my website after November 20, 2025 - www.bitsandpiecesquilting.com I made this quilt for Quilts of Valour Canada to honour Canadian service personnel and thank them for their service to our country and the world. www.quiltsofvalour.ca

About This Video

Today’s video is a Remembrance Day quilt project, and I’m sharing it as a tribute to Canadian Armed Forces members—those currently serving, our veterans, and those who have passed. I made this quilt for Quilts of Valour Canada, which is all about wrapping service personnel in a hug of warmth and thanks. I’m using a gorgeous Northcott Canadiana fabric collection I’ve built up over time (lots of bits and pieces from friends and leftovers from other projects), but this design would look absolutely fantastic in a completely scrappy version too. I walk you through my planning and “quilting math” for a very simple, very effective block that behaves a bit like a half square triangle (or even a half log cabin feel). I’m working with 2 1/2" strips and squares to keep it truly scrap friendly, aiming for a 6 1/2" block and a layout of 10 by 12 blocks (120 total) for a quilt around 60" by 70". I also share my pressing strategy—nesting seams instead of pressing open—so assembly goes faster, plus a few practical tips for sprinkling standout fabrics across the quilt. The magic here is the layout: just twisting blocks in different directions creates beautiful rows and furrows with a bold, graphic look.
