About This Video

In this video I walk you through how to create (and delete) Lovelace dashboards in Home Assistant, and why it’s the easiest way to “take control” without risking the auto-generated dashboard you started with. I show you the exact menu path from the left sidebar dashboards, then up to the overflow menu in the top-right where you hit “Edit dashboard” and get the prompt to take control. My take: it’s not scary—just click “Take control” and start experimenting with your own cards and layout. The big gotcha people run into is realizing that once you take control, your dashboard stops auto-updating when you add new devices/entities. So I show how to get that generated experience back in like 30 seconds: go to Configuration → Lovelace Dashboards → Add Dashboard, give it a title, let the URL auto-fill, and hit Create. That new dashboard shows up in your left menu and it’ll keep auto-populating as you add stuff to your instance. Bottom line: it’s never risky to take control anymore—make your custom dashboard, keep a generated one as a safety net, and go build something awesome.
