About This Video

Drag and drop in Lovelace is finally here—at least in the form I can ship right now. I’ve been working on this for months (on and off, because, you know… work and other Home Assistant projects), and I wanted to get something into your hands before the end of the year. So on Home Assistant Conference day, I pushed an alpha release of my Custom Grid View that brings drag & drop plus resizing to a Lovelace view. Is it perfect? No. Is it the final version? Also no. And the bittersweet part: this isn’t in Home Assistant core yet, so for now it’s a custom solution you can test and give feedback on. In the video I walk through install step-by-step: grab the grid-view.js from my GitHub releases, drop it into your Home Assistant config under /www, then add it as a Lovelace resource at /local/grid-view.js. After that, you enable the custom view type in the Raw Configuration Editor (grid-dnd), and you’ll see the new UI bits—like the Save Layout button and the little controls on each card. I also call out current known issues: some cards don’t resize correctly, placeholders can be misaligned, empty space isn’t handled well yet, and mobile support may be flaky. My biggest advice: don’t do this on your only production dashboard—make a copy, experiment there, and keep a backup.
