My friends, welcome to this storm camp episode of TheOutdoorGearReview. With a big system moving in—severe thunderstorms possible, a powerful cold front, and forecasts calling for damaging winds—I made the call to skip a backpacking trip. Instead, I packed up the 4Runner and headed to a lower-elevation campsite to hunker down and see what this weather was really going to do. The plan was simple: no tent, no tables, no chairs—just a good old-fashioned truck camp, a fire to knock back the bugs, and a setup that’s quick to adjust when the wind starts blowing rain sideways. Through the evening and into the morning, I tracked the updates as watches and warnings rolled in: hazardous weather outlooks, a severe thunderstorm warning, even a winter weather advisory with snow mentioned for higher elevations. I slept great with the rain coming down all night, watched Rambo: First Blood, and waited for things to get rowdy. In the end, the “big one” didn’t hit my exact spot—lots of rain, plenty of thunder and lightning around, but not the wind event that was forecasted. That’s storm chasing for you. Even without the worst of it, this was an awesome reminder that my favorite overlanding is super, super simple—more time enjoying the experience, less time messing with gear.
