About This Video

My friends, welcome. In this episode I’m taking a hard look at one of Osprey’s more interesting packs: the Kestrel LT 45L. I’ve been testing this backpack for numerous months in the real world—backpacking and even moto camping—and overall I’ve been very impressed. I walk through the feature set: the permanently attached lid with storage, the front shove-it pocket with a drainage hole, dual side stretch pockets with angled access, the included rain cover, the sleeping bag compartment, and the “interesting” side access that’s created by unzipping and undoing compression straps. On the carry side, you get an adjustable harness, adjustable torso system (18"–22"), load lifters, a solid waist belt with usable pockets, and an AirScape-style back panel that does a good job with ventilation. Now, let’s talk about the one big con: weight. This is a 45L pack that comes in at 4 lb 3 oz, and that’s significant—especially when this is the “LT” (lightweight) version. Comfort is excellent at 30 lb, and in a pinch I’d say 35 lb is realistic, but once you add food and water you really start to notice the pack’s own weight. My takeaway is simple: Osprey has the design and comfort down, but it is 2026—this company needs to figure out how to bring pack weights down, especially at $200 and with a 300D polyester build.
