About This Video

My friends, welcome. In this updated review, I take a hard, honest look at the Helikon-Tex SuperTarp—because my opinion has changed over the years. I originally liked this inexpensive ripstop polyester tarp, but I had real concerns about the quality, especially around the tie-out points and the stitching. After hundreds of trips in rain, snow, wind, and even thunderstorms with hail, the tarp never failed. In fact, it earned my trust 100%—right up until I made a mistake during a snowstorm and accidentally tore a massive, unrepairable hole when it was frozen to the ground. Because the SuperTarp was so good, I bought a brand new one and inspected it closely. The improvements are obvious: the seamwork and stitching on my new tarp are some of the best I’ve seen from Helikon-Tex—no loose threads, clean construction, and the center seam is seam-taped. I also cover the practical details: 10 ft x 10 ft size, 19 tie-off points, pack size, weight (1 lb 12 oz with both storage bags), and that excellent mesh-backed bag that lets wet gear drain outside your pack. Bottom line: in 2026, this is one of the best values in tarps. The size, storage, and storm performance make it a go-to option for most trips—just bring your own guylines and stakes.
