About This Video

In this video I’m out in Washington State checking out something brand new from Mammoth Overland—the SKL Camping Module. And yeah, they’re calling it a “module” for a reason: it’s hard-sided, all aluminum, and built with aviation-style assembly (clecos, rivets, CNC’d parts) by the same folks behind Bastion Aviation. This is a prototype—the only one that exists right now—and it was just revealed at Overland Expo, so it’s not even on their website yet. I walk through how it deploys, what makes it different than a typical soft-shell rooftop tent, and why I think this is a legit glimpse at the future of overlanding. Wind and rain don’t affect it near as much, it seals up tight, and it’s easier to heat than a canvas setup. You’ve also got onboard power controls, exterior lights for cooking, skylights, and even a powered fan—something you basically never see in rooftop tents. It’s about 300 pounds, has a stout billet/overbuilt ladder and rack setup, and the big takeaway is speed: we’re talking hard-sided, 30-second deployment up and down without wrestling soft fabric into place.
