The one I reviewed stickers out to about $89,000 after destination, which is a lot of coin. A regular GX550 Overtrail can be around $75k, but this is the Overtrail+ and it had extra options stacked on top. That Overtrail+ package alone takes it up into the low $80s before the add-ons.

Personally, I don’t think it’s worth almost another $10,000 for the few extra features we talked about. The Overtrail already gives you the off-road intent, and the Plus adds luxury-type stuff like second-row heated seats, massaging seats, and some other convenience features. If you’re buying it to actually use it off-road and overland, I’d lean Overtrail and put the money into gear and mods.

What engine is in the Lexus GX550 Overtrail+ and how much power does it make?

It’s the 3.4-liter twin-turbo V6 that Toyota is using across a lot of their newer trucks and SUVs. In this application it’s rated at 349 horsepower and 479 lb-ft of torque. It’s paired to a 10-speed automatic that, in my experience, is programmed well and just works.

Officially it’s 17 mpg combined (15 city, 21 highway), and that lines up with what I saw. We were seeing a lot of 15 mpg, and the best recent number I showed was about 14.4 mpg. I did manage 20 mpg on a highway run one time, but it’s not easy to repeat.

Nope—Overtrail trims don’t get a third row, and honestly I like that for overlanding. Lexus knows people end up pulling seats out to build sleeping platforms and storage, so they basically did you a favor here. You get the space without having to unbolt anything.

Yes, and that’s a big deal. You’ve got 4HI/4LO, a center diff lock, and you also get a rear locker—which you don’t see on a lot of “off-road” SUVs. Add the electronic KDSS and it articulates like crazy, especially in the rear.

This one had Toyo Open Country AT3s in a 265/70R18, which is a great off-road size with tons of aftermarket options. I like that Lexus stuck with an 18 because it shows intent. My gripe is the factory tires seem to come with less tread depth than the same tire you’d buy from a major retailer.

No—at least not the way this one sounded. It’s a $2,200 cat-back and every friend or family member who heard it start asked what was wrong with it. On a turbo V6 it just doesn’t sound right, and for a Lexus it’s honestly kind of embarrassing.
