Every person that’s gotten in my long-term 2019 F-150 FX4 (aka “Pop Pop’s Truck”) has said the same thing: “Ooh, that’s nice.” And in this episode, it’s because I finally solved the lifted-truck step problem with the Wolfbox power deploying running boards. This truck’s already got a 2-inch lift, 35s, and we’ve done plenty of mods, but the old static steps were awkward—by the time I stepped up, I had to duck and fold myself into the cab. These Wolfbox steps drop lower (I measured 14 inches off the ground when deployed vs 17 inches on the old ones), and it makes getting in and out just smooth. I break down what I like about the boards themselves—extruded aluminum, clean end caps, sturdy hinge brackets, and a 660-lb weight rating. The hidden bonus is the integrated LED lighting under the step, which is a feature my wife’s OEM-style power steps on her Expedition don’t even have. They’re also quieter than the factory Ford setup, and I like that they only deploy on the side you open, not both sides at once. Install-wise, this is DIY-friendly. I did it solo in about 2.5 hours with kids running around. Power is straight to the battery with an inline 5-amp fuse, plus a simple signal connection (including OBD-II), and Wolfbox’s instructions make it hard to mess up. For off-road use, I can pull the fuse as a quick “kill switch” so they won’t deploy on an obstacle—and later I’ll probably add a proper switch by my knee.
